TDP: THE WAR DOCTOR VOLUME 01: ONLY THE MONSTROUS

THE WAR DOCTOR VOLUME 01: ONLY THE MONSTROUS review

Three new battles for The War Doctor

1.1 The Innocent

As the Daleks mass their time fleet for a final assault on Gallifrey, something ancient is waiting for them at Omega One. And a sacrifice must be made.

Arch-manipulator and Time Lord strategist, Cardinal Ollistra receives shock news of the Doctor’s death.

Meanwhile, on the planet Keska, a parochial war has returned to plague a peaceful civilisation after decades of tranquillity. But how can such a war have any connection with the great Time War which, at any one moment in the whole of eternity, could threaten to tear the universe apart?

If only the Doctor were still alive.

1.2 The Thousand Worlds

With the high-ranking Time Lord Seratrix behind enemy lines, the War Doctor finds himself assigned to a rescue mission. But any room for manoeuvre is severely restricted by an area of space known as the Null Zone.

Times have changed on Keska, and a countdown to destruction is beginning.

But who are the Taalyens and what is their part in the great and terrifying Dalek plan?

1.3 The Heart of the Battle

Trapped in a citadel swarming with Daleks, the Time Lord rescue force must find a way to overcome insurmountable odds. With the Daleks apparently planning to rule the Null Zone, perhaps their thirst for universal conquest and victory has been quenched…

The War Doctor doesn’t believe so — but how can he prove it without destroying any chance of peace?

As the countdown to the destruction of Keska proceeds, a deadly choice must be made... A choice that will define this Doctor, and perhaps forever cast him in the role of ‘monster’.

TDP 544: TV Doctor Who 2015 - Episode 12 - Hell Bent

In a Nevada diner, the Doctor encounters a waitress physically identical to Clara, and begins to tell her a "story" about Clara; neither appears to recognize the other. In Gallifrey, Rassilon attempts to have the Doctor imprisoned and executed. The Time Lord military instead pledges its loyalty to the Doctor. The Doctor has the Time Lords use an extraction chamber to retrieve Clara from her timeline at the instant of her death. The Doctor takes Clara and a TARDIS and escapes Gallifrey, attempting to take her far away enough that she will return fully to life. At the end of the universe, the Doctor encounters Ashildr; the two conclude the Hybrid is the Doctor and Clara together. The Doctor decides to remove Clara's memories of him, but Clara alters the device so it will randomly affect one of them, which ends up being the Doctor. In the present, the Doctor concludes his story, who encourages him to keep going. In the back room is Ashildr and the TARDIS console. It departs, leaving the Doctor with his own TARDIS. Clara decides to eventually return to Gallifrey, and instead sets off with Ashildr to explore the universe.

TDP 531: Doom Coalition 1 From BigFinish

1. The Eleven by Matt Fitton

The Eleven. A Time Lord whose previous personalities live on in his mind: arguing, plotting, jostling for supremacy... He is also Gallifrey's most dangerous criminal. And he has escaped.

The Doctor is recalled to his homeworld to lead the hunt. As they search the Capitol's corridors of power, the Academy halls and the cells of the highest security penitentiary, Liv realises the worst monsters may be among the Doctor's own people.

For inside his fractured mind, the Eleven has a plan. And its deadly consequences will extend through space and time...

2. The Red Lady by John Dorney

An anomaly in time brings the Doctor and Liv to London in the 1960s, where they meet a young lady named Helen Sinclair - desperately trying to make a name for herself in the face of sexism and prejudice.

Whilst the Doctor tried to uncover the secrets of a mysterious artefact, a far deadlier mystery awaits Liv and Helen in the collection of a recently deceased antiquarian.

Because that's where they find the Red Lady. Because if you do, you might not like what you see.

3. The Galileo Trap by Marc Platt

Helen Sinclair doesn't know what hit her. One moment she was trapped in a dead-end job in 1960s London, and now she is transported back to Renaissance Italy over three centuries before. Florence is a city in turmoil. A new plague stalks the streets. A ferocious behemoth rampages through the vineyards. And Galileo Galilei, celebrated scientist, astronomer and old friend of the Doctor, is imprisoned in his own villa for heresy.

But why has Galileo summoned the Doctor? Who are the mysterious Fortuna and Cleaver? Why have they been sent to Earth? And what is Galileo's secret? Is it the last thing he saw before he went blind?

4. The Satanic Mill by Edward Collier

The Satanic Mill - a vast Victorian factory floating in the deep of space.

As the Doctor closes in on his quarry, long buried animosities come boiling to the surface on this ancient and powerful satellite, in a final confrontation that could have unimaginable consequences.

And even that is only the beginning...

No one could travel through history – past present and future – as much as the Doctor does without leaving an impression. Much of what we know about this mysterious figure comes from what he does – the planets he saves and the monsters he defeats. But until now we’ve had little knowledge of his writings.

The Time Lord Letters is a unique collection of over one hundred letters, notes, and jottings both by and to the Doctor – correspondence by turns entertaining and inspiring, funny and flippant, brilliant and incredible.

From the Doctor’s plea to the Time Lords to help end the War Games to an extract from the written defence he submitted at his subsequent trial; from his application for the post of Caretaker at Coal Hill School to his apology to the Queen for missing dinner; from telepathic messages to the High Council on Gallifrey to his famous letter to Santa Claus – like the Doctor himself, the mood can change in an instant.

The Time Lord Letters captures the best and most dramatic moments of an impossible life. You’ll never see the Doctor in quite the same way again.

Colin Baker’s career as an actor spans six decades of television and theatre. To many he is Paul Merroney from the BBC’s much-loved 1970s drama The Brothers. To others he is the unhinged Bayban the Butcher in Blake’s 7, or Inspector Morse on stage. Or perhaps some know him best simply as Colin Baker himself, the man who entered the jungle and won over the nation in I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.

Yet, millions know him best as the colourfully-dressed Sixth Doctor in Doctor Who, a character that has endured - and will continue to endure - through generations.

This is Colin’s own story, in conversation with interviewer Nicholas Briggs.

All copies of the CD version purchased before 3rd September 2015 will be signed by Colin.

Isn’t life terrible? Isn’t it all going to end in tears? Won’t it be good to just give up and let something else run my mind, my life?

Something distinctly odd is going on in Arbroath. It could be to do with golfers being dragged down into the bunkers at the Fetch Brothers’ Golf Spa Hotel, never to be seen again. It might be related to the strange twin grandchildren of the equally strange Mrs Fetch – owner of the hotel and fascinated with octopuses. It could be the fact that people in the surrounding area suddenly know what others are thinking, without anyone saying a word.

Whatever it is, the Doctor is most at home when faced with the distinctly odd. With the help of Fetch Brothers' Junior Receptionist Bryony, he’ll get to the bottom of things. Just so long as he does so in time to save Bryony from quite literally losing her mind, and the entire world from destruction.

Because something huge, ancient and alien lies hidden beneath the ground – and it’s starting to wake up…

TDP 490: DW BOOK Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who

@BBCWBC @BBCBooks @DWBBCBooks @0tralala @LMMyles @Andr3wSmith #doctorwho #tindogpodcast

Doctor Who stories are many things: thrilling adventures, historical dramas, tales of love and war and jelly babies. They’re also science fiction – but how much of the science is actually real, and how much is really fiction?

The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who is a mind-bending blend of story and science that will help you see Doctor Who in a whole new light, weaving together a series of all-new adventures, featuring every incarnation of the Doctor. With commentary that explores the possibilities of time travel, life on other planets, artificial intelligence, parallel universes and more, Simon Guerrier and Dr Marek Kukula show how Doctor Who uses science to inform its unique style of storytelling – and just how close it has often come to predicting future scientific discoveries.

This book is your chance to be the Doctor's companion and explore what's out there. It will make you laugh, and think, and see the world around you differently.

Because anything could be out there. And going out there is the only way to learn what it is.

TDP 488: Doctor Who Book CITY OF DEATH

#doctorwho @gossjam  #tindogpodcast @DWBBCBooks

The Doctor takes Romana for a holiday in Paris – a city which, like a fine wine, has a bouquet all its own. Especially if you visit during one of the vintage years. But the TARDIS takes them to 1979, a table-wine year, a year whose vintage is soured by cracks – not in their wine glasses but in the very fabric of time itself.

Soon the Time Lords are embroiled in an audacious alien scheme which encompasses home-made time machines, the theft of the Mona Lisa, the resurrection of the much-feared Jagaroth race, and the beginning (and quite possibly the end) of all life on Earth.

Aided by British private detective Duggan, whose speciality is thumping people, the Doctor and Romana must thwart the machinations of the suave, mysterious Count Scarlioni – all twelve of him – if the human race has any chance of survival.

But then, the Doctor’s holidays tend to turn out a bit like this.

Featuring the Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Baker, City of Death is a novel by James Goss based on the 1979 Doctor Whostory written by Douglas Adams under the pen-name David Agnew. City of Death is one of the best-loved serials in the show’s 50-year history and was watched by over 16 million viewers when first broadcast.

Life goes on, day after day - until a monster appears in their midst. It lives alone in a small hut on the edge of Scrapyard, and scours at night for the remains of dead robots. Frankie sets out to confront the monster in its lair. Its name? The Doctor!

TDP 481: Big Finish Main Range 200 - Secret History

@bigfinish #doctorwho #tindogpodcast

Synopsis

The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Steven and Vicki to the Italian city of Ravenna in the year 540 – besieged by the army of the celebrated Byzantine general Belisarius. Caught up in the fighting, Steven ends up on a boat bound for Constantinople, the heart of the Roman Empire.

Rescuing Steven, however, is the least of the Doctor's problems – because he shouldn't be mixed up in this particular adventure at all. Someone has sabotaged his own personal timeline, putting him in the place of his First incarnation... but who, and why? The truth is about to be revealed – but at what cost to all of the Doctors, and to the whole future history of the planet Earth?

Synopsis

It's been ten years since the final assault on Telos, the last act of the Great Cyber War. Thanks to the Glittergun, humanity prevailed – and the half-machine Cybermen were utterly obliterated.

Out on the furthest fringes of the galaxy, however, they left their mark – in the form of a giant Cyber-head, hundreds of feet high. A monument? A memorial? A tomb? The Doctor, the Cybermen's most indefatigable adversary, sets out to investigate... but he fails to return to his TARDIS. Leaving the Ship, his two companions – brave Highlander Jamie MacCrimmon, and super-intelligent Zoe Heriot – find a stranger in the Doctor's place. A stranger in a coat of many colours, who insists that he's the Doctor – transposed in time and space with one of his former selves...

But why here? Why now? Has the universe really seen the last of the Cybermen..?

Colin Baker

Colin BakerFor the second successive year we are proud to be bringing a Doctor to Whooverville – and it’s an old friend of our group and our convention. We are absolutely delighted to be able to announce that COLIN BAKER has agreed to return to Whooverville.
Colin, the Sixth Doctor of course, needs no introduction. If you have yet to see him at a convention you are in for a treat. He is a fabulous guest and a genuinely nice guy.
He was the main guest at the very first Whooverville, back in 2009 and we are really looking forward to showing him what we have done with our little convention, as well as to asking him about Big Finish, his part in the 50th Anniversary Celebrations, I’m A Celebrity… and so much more. Many thanks to Colin for agreeing to come back and see us again

Guests
Jenny T. Colgan

Jenny T. ColganJenny published her first novel in 2000 and is one of the UK’s most popular romantic novelists, winning the award for Romantic Novel of the Year in 2013 for Welcome to Rosie Hopkins’ Sweetshop of Dreams. A life-long Who fan, who once won a competition to meet Peter Davison, Jenny’s first Doctor Who novel, Dark Horizons was published in 2012. She is also a contributor to the recently published collection of Who novellas, originally published as e-books, Time Trips. Many thanks to our friends at BBC Books for helping to arrange Jenny’s appearance at Whooverville.

Richard Marson

Richard MarsonRichard is the author of two acclaimed biographies of Doctor Who producers. JNT: The Life and Scandalous Times of John Nathan Turner, published in 2013, confounded many people’s expectations by being a serious, scholarly and above all sympathetic account of the life of the last producer of classic Doctor Who. He has followed this up his year, with his biography of the series’ first producer, Drama and Delight: The Life of Verity Lambert, which is garnering rave reviews. Both books are published by Miwk Publishing, to whom our thanks go for facilitating Richard’s appearance at Whooverville. Richard was for many years a contributor to Doctor Who Magazine and was editor of Blue Peter between 1998 and 2007. He also produced the fabulous 2012 documentary, Tales of Television Centre. We very much look forward to meeting him.

In the 1970s he worked with the legendary Hipgnosis, designers of album covers, working with artists such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Moody Blues and Peter Gabriel. His painting for the Paul and Linda McCartney
album ‘Wings Over America’ propelled him into the international arena. of course he is well-known to Who fans as the designer of the covers of a number of Target books. More information on Jeff and his work can be found at http://www.jeffcummins.com/ Many thanks to Jeff for contacting us, we look forward to meeting him.

She is the author of the forthcoming Anthony Ainley biography, The Man Behind The Master, to be published by Fantom Films.

Michael Pickwoad

Michael PickwoadMichael is the current Production Manager on Doctor Who, the man ultimately responsible for all art and design matters on the series. The son of War Machines actor William Mervyn, he has never done a convention before. Many thanks to our friend Tristan Peatfield for making the introductions.

Dan Starkey

Dan StarkeyDan has become the go-to-guy for Sontarans both for televised Doctor Who and for Big Finish audios, since appearing in the 10th Doctor Story The Sontaran Strategem/The Poison Sky. He is probably best known as Commander Strax, a role which he first played in the Eleventh Doctor story A Good Man Goes To War and which he has reprised on several occasions since as part of the Paternoster Gang.

After 3 seasons in prosthetics as Randal Moon in Wizards vs. Aliens, Dan finally got his face on-screen as Ian the elf in the Doctor Who Christmas Special Last Christmas, before covering himself in glory as part of the winning team in the Christmas 2014 series of University Challenge.

Dan is a long-standing Doctor Who fan, which will make it particularly pleasing to welcome him to Whooverville.

Terrance Dicks

Terrance DicksTerrance Dicks is a very old friend of our group, having twice previously visited us for Friday evening meetings, as well as for one of the 625 Lines events at QUAD that we co-organised.

Terrance needs no introduction, he is simply the most important writer ever to contribute to Doctor Who and the biggest influence on the show of the last 40 years. Terrance is a great convention guest, a font of fascinating stories and memories, and a genuinely nice, approachable person. If you haven’t met him yet, you are in for a treat.

David Benson

David BensonDavid Benson is perhaps best know to us as the voice of Panda in the Big Finish Iris Wildthyme audio range, for playing Orson Welles in ‘Invaders from Mars’, also for Big Finish and (among others) Aleister Crowley in ‘The Scarifyers’.

He is also known for his hit one-man show ‘Think No Evil Of Us’, based on the life of Kenneth Williams as well as for his similar show based on Frankie Howerd and for playing Noel Cowerd in the BBC comedy show ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’.

David made his television Doctor Who debut this year as the Master of Ceremonies of the Archery Contest in ‘Robot of Sherwood’.

Matthew Waterhouse

Matthew WaterhouseThe son of a solicitor, Matthew was a great fan of Doctor Who in his younger days and went on to play Adric alongside the 4th and 5th Doctors.

Matthew has recently returned to Doctor Who as Adric for Big Finish alongside Peter Davison as the 5th Doctor.

TDP 478: Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures - 4.05. SUBURBAN HELL

@bigfinish @Lou_Jameson  #doctorwho #tindogpodcast

Somewhere in a suburb of North London, there's a crisis. More than a crisis, a positive disaster: Belinda and Ralph are expecting four for supper, and there's no Marie Rose sauce for the Prawns Marie Rose. All in all, the evening couldn't possibly get any worse...

Until the doorbell rings, bringing the Doctor and Leela to the dinner party. They've got a crisis, too – temporal ruckage has sent the TARDIS to another time zone entirely. Meaning they might have to endure a whole evening in Belinda's company.

But the Doctor and Leela aren't the only uninvited guests tonight. There's a strange fog falling, out in the road. And in that fog: savage blue-skinned monsters, with dinner party plans of their own. Because it's not Prawns Marie Rose on their menu – it's people!

TDP 474: Big Finish Main Range 198 - Doctor Who - The Defectors

@bigfinish #tindogpodcast #doctorwho

Synopsis

'...it possesses a wonderful nostalgic quality, aided no doubt by the incredible chemistry between, and performances from Sylvester McCoy and Katy Manning... It’s absolutely marvellous. In fact it’s marvellous with an extra dollop of brilliant on top. More please!' Tim Mass Movement

'... well handled concepts and twists alongside strong performances... an entertaining adventure... most effective in the way it blends the action and military intrigue of the Pertwee era with the darker, more ambiguous edge of McCoy's Doctor.' SFX

Jo Grant is shocked to find most of her colleagues are missing. Then she discovers that the Doctor has inexplicably changed.

But there’s no time to worry about it, as she and her misplaced Time Lord friend are whisked to the mysterious Delphin Isle on a matter of national security. There, they encounter a disturbingly odd form of local hospitality and learn of a highly classified incident that took place during the Cold War.

Why exactly have they been brought here? And what is the truth concerning the bodies in the harbour and the vast project being undertaken beneath a cloak of secrecy?

Synopsis

An attack by Travis and a squad of Federation pursuit ships leaves the Liberator damaged, its engines in desperate need of repair.

Blake is forced to take his ship into The Derelict Zone, which is filled with hundreds of drifting spacecraft that never made it out alive...

The same fate awaits his crew. Because the time long expected has come... one of them has turned traitor.
